You can get off the ship and spend the day reading on a beach chair or swimming in the crystal clear waters. This Honduran island has a Central American influence with a Caribbean twist. Activities and amenities, including shopping, restaurants, and bars, are within walking distance of the port. As part of our recent cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas, we visited the beautiful island of Roatan.
Duty-Free Shopping
In addition to cocktails and other beverages, the menu includes food items such as quesadillas, nachos, wings, grilled chicken, ceviche, and more. There’s so much to do in the port area that you could spend your entire day ashore just enjoying what it has to offer. However, if you plan to go off exploring on your own or taking an excursion, there’s also a transportation spot with taxis and shuttles available. This trail takes you back into a wooded area and winds around the water. If you have mobility issues, we recommend either taking the chairlift or the paved path as the nature trail includes some slight elevation changes and has loose gravel. But if you want a nice trip through some flora on your way to the beach — and some great spots to take photos of your ship — consider choosing the nature trail.
Coxen Hole cruise terminal
The Port of Roatan, located in Coxen Hole, is the island’s original cruise port and caters to a variety of cruise lines. West End is a small village, local hangout and activities’ hub located 20 minutes from Coxen Hole. West End is full of restaurants, bars, clubs, stores, shops, galleries, beautiful beaches, and bays. To get to the parking area, you will have to walk past the tour and excursion booths and make a left at the end of the walkway. Once you exit the Town Center building, you will notice passengers being dropped off in the parking area, just outside the main door and inside the port.

Cruisers who don’t want to venture out in Roatan and choose to stay in the terminal can have fun without leaving Port of Roatan. Tourists enjoy cultural exhibitions like Garifuna Punta dancing.
Scuba Dive at the Mayan Reef
Located adjacent to Mahogany Bay beach is a zipline that takes you right down into the beach area. The zipline runs through jungle vegetation and over water, ravines, mangroves, and creeks. The ride includes altitudes between 16 and 65 feet and covers a distance of 1,600 feet.

If you’re taking a cruise to the western Caribbean, your itinerary might include a stop to the Honduran island of Roatán. There are two cruise ports there, one of them being the Carnival Corp.-owned Mahogany Bay. When visiting Roatan on a cruise, one of the important decisions you’ll need to make is how to plan your onshore excursions. The variety of cruise lines visiting Roatan ensures that there’s something for everyone, whether it’s a family adventure, a luxurious getaway, or a culturally enriching experience. Throughout the year, the island plays host to a variety of cruise lines, each offering unique experiences and itineraries that include Roatan as a key port of call.
Monkey Around at Gumbalimba Park
Our ship docked at what is known officially as the “Port of Roatan” and is located at the town of Coxen Hole. The description of the excursion was a little vague, so we didn’t know exactly what to expect. In reality, the three parts of the tour were completely separate. Still, we enjoyed the tour and really liked getting three different experiences in one day in Roatan. Our first (and thus far, only) visit to Roatan was on a Western Caribbean cruise on the Norwegian Breakaway. We had heard many great things about the island and were eager to visit.

Tours, Shore Excursions, and Car Hire
Car rentals are available on Roatán, with rental kiosks near the cruise terminal. The island is easy to navigate, just watch for horses and cows on the road. Mahogany Bay cruise terminal can accommodate 2 large vessels (post-Panamax sized) simultaneously. The island is popular for its beaches (West End, Camp Bay), crystal water, all-year sunny weather, clear blue skies.
There were several other animals, including spider monkeys and the coatimundi, which looks kinda like a raccoon. We even saw a paca, which is a large rodent, rummaging through the jungle floor, not part of the exhibits. Thankfully, there are also quite a few excursions that combine two or three of these popular activities. Over at the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center port area just off the ship, there are even more choices when it comes to food and beverages. The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is located on the southern side of Roatán, a 33-mile-long Honduran island located north of the mainland in the Caribbean Sea. The development, which opened in late 2009, is a joint venture between Carnival Corporation and local businessman Jerry Hynds.

Our bus dropped us off at the Las Palmas Resort, where we had nearly two hours to enjoy the beach, get some lunch and sip on a couple of pineapple rum drinks.

The Port of Roatan can only accommodate one cruise ship at a time alongside its pier and two more ships via anchorage. If your day in port coincides with another ship's arrival, you might be docked, or you might need to tender to shore. Usually, Royal Caribbean cruise ships dock while Norwegian cruise ships tender when they coincide at Port of Roatan. This 20-acre beachfront adventure park offers many options for adventure seekers. It serves ships from the fleets of NCLH-Norwegian, RCG-Royal Caribbean, MSC, and Virgin Voyages. Coxen Hole is the capital of Bay Islands and their largest city.
I hope you are able to plan and fulfill all of your fantastical travel dreams! Feel free to click around my site to discover more exciting destinations and itineraries. Yes, Roatan has medical facilities, but it’s advisable to have travel insurance to cover any unexpected medical expenses. Apply sunscreen to protect against sunburn, and stay hydrated in the tropical climate.
Right at the pier, you’ll find plenty of stores offering both local goods and the traditional duty-free shops found at many cruise ports. There are also many restaurants with outdoor seating to take advantage of Roatan’s fantastic weather. To experience the real Roatan, cruise ship visitors must venture out from the immediate area of the port.
You might exhaust what Coxen Hole itself has to offer in a couple of hours, so I would definitely plan an excursion of some kind as there is so much else to see in Roatan. Do be careful with the roads though – the sidewalks are non-existent in places and the street is busy with cars going back and forward to the port. I wouldn’t have any problems negotiating an island tour with any of these vendors, They were all friendly and keen for your business.
You will then be directly helping the local economy and a small business owner who is trying to compete with the conglomerate that owns the port area. The relationship between Roatan and Honduras is probably what most concerns cruise visitors, as it is fair to say that Honduras does not have the safest reputation. The Port of Roatan is located at Coxen Hole on the island of Roatan, off the coast of mainland Honduras. So I’ve put this guide together for future cruise passengers which I hope you will find helpful when planning a trip to Roatan.
